Now, a new study suggests that traumatic brain injury (TBI) may be damaging in yet another way; it may be preventing its victims from getting or keeping a job.

The University of Oklahoma Medical School recently completed a study comparing 67 veterans who suffered a TBI to 67 similar veterans who did not. It sought to determine what physical and psychological effects continued to plague…

In recent years, we have vastly improved our understanding of the consequences and seriousness of traumatic brain injuries. A massive new study undertaken by researchers at the University of Glasgow and the University of Edinburgh suggests that patients admitted to the hospital, as a result of a traumatic brain injury, still…

Brain Injury Awareness Month

Author: P. Christopher Guedri, Richmond, VA Personal Injury Attorney

We often take our general cognitive awareness for granted in our day-to-day lives, but the ability to think is a fragile thing.  If you suffer a traumatic brain injury that causes a change in your ability to form memory, perceive, or problem solve, then your life may change greatly.  Head injuries range in severity from a simple concussion all the way to permanent degradation of your mental ability.[1] Americans suffer an estimated 1.7 million traumatic brain injuries each year, with about 1.3 million cases resulting in hospitalization.  Of those, 52,000 cases eventually end in death.  Of the major causes of traumatic brain injuries, over half are the direct result…

Underride: New Study Shows Guards Are Not Enough

Author: P. Christopher Guedri, Richmond, VA Personal Injury Attorney

We all know that trucks and tractor trailers are some of the most dangerous vehicles on the road. Their sheer size and weight creates the potential for death or serious injury during almost any accident. However, proper safety equipment can improve a driver’s chances in the event of a tractor trailer accident.

One of the most important pieces of safety equipment on a tractor trailer is the underride guard, a bracing piece of metal that projects down from the back of the trailer. Many tractor trailer accidents are caused by differences in braking times when a driver overestimates the stopping time of a truck and rear-ends the larger vehicle. In the absence…

Cargo Securement on Commercial Vehicles

Author: P. Christopher Guedri, Richmond, VA Personal Injury Attorney

Commercial trucks and buses are usually the biggest vehicles on the roads, and are a common cause of vehicle crashes. In 2012, nearly 4,000 people were killed in crashes involving large trucks.[1]  Because these large vehicles can be such a safety hazard, it is important that all commercial vehicles comply with all specified safety requirements. The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) is working towards safer conditions for all drivers by regulating safety hazards common to large, commercial vehicles. [2]  Each year, the CVSA conducts an International Roadcheck, targeting a specific safety issue for large trucks.[3]  2015 marked the CVSA’s 28th annual International…

Chrysler Found Liable in Jeep Crash

Author: P. Christopher Guedri, Richmond, VA Personal Injury Attorney

A Georgia jury has found Chrysler liable for the death of a young boy who was killed when his family’s Jeep Grand Cherokee was rear-ended by a pickup truck. The family’s lawyers alleged that a poorly designed and inadequately protected fuel tank caused the Jeep to explode as a result of the collision. The tank was situated only 11 inches from the rear bumper.  The gas tank in the following year’s edition of the car was moved much farther forward. The jury awarded the boy’s family $150 million, finding that Chrysler acted with “a reckless or wanton disregard for human life.”[1]

This verdict could serve as a rallying call for accident victims and attorneys…
